contributed to the eventual general disappearance of a
then superb technology tool called
the TYPE-WRITER or THE TYPE-WRITER MACHINE.
in Nigeria,
the disappearance of the TYPE-WRITER / TYPE-WRITER MACHINE

led to the collateral disappearance of some

■ JOB TYPES
■ JOB TITLES
■ MEANS OF EARNING INCOME
FOR
INDIVIDUAL SELF-EMPLOYED LOW INCOME GROUP ENTREPRENEURS
WHO EARNED A LIVING BY
HUSTLING / TYPING STUFF WITH THEIR PERSONAL TYPE-WRITER MACHINES
FOR
FOLKS WHO NEEDED TYPEWRITTEN DOCUMENTS
■ SOME COURSES OF STUDY and/or TRAINING PROGRAMMES i.e LEARNING PROGRAMMES
here in Nigeria
there used to be a
JOB .. JOB FUNCTION .. and JOB TITLE / JOB DESIGNATION
called
TYPIST.
it was a very important job as
the job of the Typist was to
type documents for
▲ the boss
▲ the organization
and it was important that
internal documentation
and
outgoing documentation
was as error free as possible
in spelling, grammar and details of arithmetical / mathematical content
and also get done as quickly as possible.
the TYPIST JOB was a job that required specific training
and folks who wanted to work as TYPISTS
needed to go and learn how to use a TYPE-WRITER MACHINE
and also get a recognised / acceptable CERTIFICATE
from a recognized approved Training Institution showing that
that had studied TYPING.
back in the day then
there was something called SHORT-HAND
and
folks used to register with/at Training Institutes to study
TYPING and SHORT-HAND.
if my memory serves correctly
some folks got certified in TYPING only
however
there seemed to be a general thinking then that
if possible
it was better to get a certificate for both TYPING AND SHORT-HAND
as
the holder of such a certificate
could easily take oral dictations from the boss and/or other managers
and
also easily note down discussions in company meetings
and so could be employed as a SECRETARY
which was usually a higher position in the Company Hierarchy
than the position of a TYPIST
and
also a better/higher paid job in terms of remuneration
than the job position of TYPIST.
there was a related job here in
the Nigeria Civil Service
.. in both the Federal Civil Service and the States Government Service ..
called
a STENOGRAPHER.
that JOB too
.. the STENOGRAPHER JOB ..
has disappeared
like
the TYPIST JOB.
the original TYPEWRITER MACHINE worked without electricity.
then later the ELECTRIC TYPE-WRITER MACHINE was invented and put into use.
at that period in history, i guess the name
IBM BUSINESS MACHINES was quite a name here in Nigeria
… if my memory serves correctly.
there was also a name called
PITMAN or so
… if my memory serves correctly.
and a TRAINING INSTITUTION called
PITMAN TRAINING INSTITUTE or so
… if my memory serves correctly.
i guess maybe that Training Institute was headquartered in Europe
.. maybe in the U.K ( United Kingdom ) ..
and folks could get certification in
■ TYPING
■ TYPING AND SHORT-HAND
■ SECRETARIAL STUDIES
from that PITMAN TRAINING INSTITUTE then
both here in Nigeria and in the U.K ( United Kingdom ).
