especially because
today 2024

the concept of
going to the newspaper vendor every morning
and
buying at least one newspaper
to read

so that
you can get
some information

.. some sort of idea ..

as to what is going on
in Nigeria

seems to be such an anachronistic concept.

i suppose

enlightened informed assay

would probably
attribute this
to

being a by-process
of

the development and growth of the internet,
the growth of internet access,
the growth / increase of internet use,
the increase of internet availability

here in Nigeria
over the years.

this view
is
probably correct

and
may be affirmed
by

the observation in some other countries
where

with
the increasing availability and usage of the internet

physical daily newspapers
seem to

be becoming
.. or to have become increasingly ..

obsolete – –
old fashioned – –
an old fashioned way of doing things – –
anachronistic.

in my own personal view
while
this explanation may hold
for

a generally bouyant economy ..
a generally upscale economy ..
a generally functional economy ..

in Nigeria
there may be other reasons
that may have contributed to .
. for example ..
the disappearance of some newspapers / newspaper publications
over the years
and
therefore also to
the ( .. increasing .. ) removal of the daily newspaper from being
an integral every day necessity component of
the life of the ordinary Nigeria citizen over the years.

i mean

let’s take a look
by

random recall

at
some newspapers

that
have been published at some time in Nigeria

and/or

are still being published in Nigeria as at date November 2024 / December 2024

and
sort of

do some sort of assay
to see

if
these newspapers were ever
an integral every day necessity component of
the life of the ordinary Nigeria citizen
… either regionally or nationally

and
to see

if
any or all
of
these newspapers are still
as at date November 2024 / December 2024
an integral every day necessity component of
the life of the ordinary Nigeria citizen.

The approach of Random Recall
i.e
The approach of Random Recall by Memory
i.e
The approach of Memory

implies
in itself
that

for this post
we shall do

no detailed research to dig up names
of newspapers
that have ever been published in Nigeria
at any point in time

and

it also implies
that

as memory is not infallible

we are likely to miss out some names.

however,
these 2 observations?
should not
have

an undue negative net effect
on
the effort to recall
… off the top of the head and in no particular order …
the names of

some newspapers
that
at some point or the other were published in Nigeria
and/or
are still being published in Nigeria as at date November 2024 / December 2024.

Proceeding by effort of random recall of memory
i.e
proceeding with the effort of random recall by memory
such newspapers names include,
among others, :

The Daily Star,

The Daily? Satellite?,

The Observer,

The Sunday Observer,

The Sunday? Sketch?,

The Daily Sketch,

The Nigerian Tide,

The New Nigerian,

The Champion,

The Concord,

The Sunday Concord,

The Sunday Punch,

The Sunday Times,

The Weekend,

The Daily Times,

etc

etc

etc

Chidimma Adetshina nma nm,
the general approach adopted / to be adopted
for this post
will include
that

having come up with some names of newspapers
that have been published at some time in Nigeria
and/or
are still being published in Nigeria as at date November 2024 / December 2024

we will proceed further
by
doing some sort of assay

to see
if
these newspapers were ever an integral every day necessity component
of
the life of the ordinary Nigeria citizen
… either regionally or nationally …

and
to see
if
any or all of these newspapers
are still
as at date November 2024 / December 2024
an integral every day necessity component
of the life of the ordinary Nigeria citizen

i guess that
will be
.. on it’s own ..
quite an exercise.

in any case,
Chidimma Adetshina ornyeh artuh nm, ( onye atu nm ) ( onyeatu nm ),
having

done

some sort of assay
to see
if
these newspapers were
ever
an integral every day necessity component
of
the life of the ordinary Nigeria citizen
… either regionally or nationally

and
to see
if
any or all of these newspapers
are still
as at date November 2024 / December 2024
an integral every day necessity component
of
the life of the ordinary Nigeria citizen

i guess one can
thereafter
proceed further forwards
by

then seeing if
we can :

(1) spot any newspaper(s) that
is/are no longer in print

and
see if we can identify the reasons
why
it/they are no longer in print.

(2) check if
the daily circulation figures of
any newspaper(s) that
is/are still in print
are higher than
their 1970s / 1980s era circulation figures
for example
or
otherwise

and
see if we can identify the reasons
why.

for example
is Champion Newspaper still in print ?

also, for example
is the Concord still in print ?

also by way of further example :

did the Champion Newspaper
and
the Concord Newspaper
start publication at the same date
or in the same year
or were they published at the same years in Nigeria History for some years
or for all the years of their existence ?

if they were published at different times,
for example,
if the Concord Newspaper was published before the Champion Newspaper,
what led to
the Concord Newspaper going out of circulation?

was it the impact of the internet ?

if the Champion Newspaper came into being
after the Concord Newspaper had become defunct,
what led to the Champion Newspaper going out of circulation ?

was it the internet ?

was it the same reasons that led to the Concord Newspaper becoming defunct that
led to the Champion Newspaper becoming defunct ?

did the impact of the general state of the Nigeria Economy have
any effect on the sustainability of publication
of
either the Concord
or the Champion?

if so,
why and/or how ?

by the way
.. Oku Iboku papermills ..
did the closure? of
Oku Iboku paper manufacturing company?
have an impact on Newspaper publishers here in Nigeria ?

and
while
one is still on
the subject matter
of
newspapers in Nigeria,

according to rumours,

Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe
( President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
in
the Federal Government
in which
Alhaji Tafewa Balewa
was
Prime Minister
and
De-Facto Head of the Federal Government of Nigeria
circa 1960 A.D )

is
both
rumoured and reputed to

have had
a formidable chain of newspapers
including

for example

the famous West African Pilot
which was read
across West Africa
according to rumours

and
was an integral utility item
in
Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe’s efforts towards achieving independence for Nigeria
i.e towards achieving self-rule for Nigeria

and
the Eastern Statesman?
which was published in
the then Eastern Region of Nigeria

( .. the then Eastern Region of Nigeria
being a terminology
more accurate in description
as
the then South Eastern Region of Nigeria
i.e
the then Southern & Eastern Region of Nigeria .. ).

so what about these newspapers?

are they still in publication today November 2024 / December 2024 ?

what led to their going defunct ?

was it the internet ?

was it the general state of the Nigeria Economy ?

was it the Nigerian Civil War i.e the Biafra War [1967 to 1970] ?
.. if so how ?

and just
for the purposes of general discussion,

does the unit cost of a newspaper
in any way
have an impact on
whether that newspaper emerges as
an integral every day necessity component of
the life of
the ordinary Nigeria citizen
… either regionally or nationally ?

i mean
back in the day
in 1974 ( i.e 2024 – 1974 = ) 50 years ago
and thereabouts

one could pick up
a copy of The Daily Times
and
a copy of The Observer
for 10 kobo
at
a unit cost of 5 kobo each.

( 100 kobo make 1 Naira ).

did this
comparatively very low cost of a newspaper in Nigeria as at
circa 1974
have some impact on
newspapers being an integral every day necessity component
of the life of
the ordinary Nigeria citizen
… either regionally or nationally ?

what is the cost of a newspaper
today
November 2024 / December 2024
in
Nigeria ?

does the cost of a newspaper in Nigeria today
November 2024 / December 2024
have some impact on
newspapers being an integral every day necessity component of
the life of
the ordinary Nigeria citizen
… either regionally or nationally ?

In effect,

does the cost of a unit newspaper item
comparative to
the disposable income, if any,
of the ordinary Nigeria citizen
as at date
today November 2024 / December 2024
have some impact on
newspapers being an
integral every day necessity component of
the life of
the ordinary Nigeria citizen
… either regionally or nationally ?

does the cost of a unit newspaper item
comparative to
the salary of the lowest paid worker in Nigeria
as at date
today November 2024 / December 2024
have some impact on
newspapers being an
integral every day necessity component of
the life of
the ordinary Nigeria citizen
… either regionally or nationally ?

does the cost of a unit newspaper item
comparative to
the applicable minimum wage salary in Nigeria
today November 2024 / December 2024
have some impact on newspapers
newspapers being an
integral every day necessity component of
the life of
the ordinary Nigeria citizen
… either regionally or nationally ?
