the Outside Shower
is
different
in some ways
from
the Outside Bathroom.
historically,
here in Nigeria
in residential buildings
built with cement
the Bathroom
is usually an integral part of the main building
and
in
buildings designed that way
the user does not need to
step outside the main house to
get to
the Bathroom
or
the Toilet.
some of these type of buildings
have accommodation / living quarters
for
servants or staff
in
the same premises
and
usually
these structures
i.e
■the servants quarters
■the boys quarters
■the staff quarters
are
separate from
the main building
and
do not have
the Bathroom and/or the Toilet
en suite
and
the user needs to
step out of
his/her room
and
therefore
out of the residential space
to get to
the Bathroom and/or the Toilet
it is this sort
of Bathroom and/or Toilet
that is
described in
Nigeria Use of English
as
an Outside Bathroom

and/or
an Outside Toilet.
depending on
the finances of the house builder
and/or
his/her thinking
i.e
his/her mindset
pertaining to
the sort of convenience
i.e
the quality of convenience
that
servants should have
the Outside Bathroom
and/or
the Outside Toilet
may

or may not
be roofed
although
generally
for purposes of
■cleanliness,
■maintaining the neatness of the overall environment,
■etc
most folks try to ensure
that
the Outside Bathroom and/or Outside Toilet
is/are
roofed.
the Outside Bathroom is
.. historically and currently ..

a feature
of and in
a fair number of buildings across Nigeria.
the Outside Shower
is,
in contrast,
not a very common structure
here in Nigeria.

while it is a reality
that
some folks
do
take their bath
i.e
have their bath
outside
i.e
in the open
in some locations in Nigeria
it is not common place
for fixed Shower Points to
be built/located in such locations
and
usually a bucket

or
a small bath tub ( plastic or metal )
is used
as a receptacle / container
to hold the water
to be used for bathing

and
in many instances
it is
the little children
that
are bathed
by
their mom
or
elder siblings
in such scenarios/scenaria
in the early hours of the morning
before
they set off for school
i.e
before the activities of the day start
while their mom and/or elder siblings
use the Outside Bathroom when

they themselves want to bath.
as far as i can tell
here in Nigeria
the idea of
erecting a building
either
for residential purposes
or
for commercial purposes
and
putting up an Outside Shower
somewhere in the premises
as part of
the overall structural design concept
of the building
is not a very common idea

nor
is such a practice
very common
although one or two folks
here and there
who, for example, have
a Swimming Pool in their premises
may include an Outside Shower
somewhere around
as part of the Design Concept.

the above
i.e
the aforegoing
essentially holds true
for
■the urban areas
■the townships
■the towns
■the cities.
in the rural areas
i.e
in the villages
and
“not-so-urban” areas
the picture
is somewhat different.
by this
i mean
that
the Structural Demographics
is different
from
that of
the Urban Areas
and
also
varies from one village to another.
perhaps we shall return to this subject matter in another post.
for now
it will suffice to
simply say
that
the types of buildings
and
the number of buildings
in the villages
differ
from that of
the cities and towns
and that
this difference
in the types of buildings
is reflected
in the numbers of
En Suite Bathrooms and Outside Bathrooms
in the villages
comparative to
the Urban Areas.
be all that as it may be,
tell me,
in the final analysis,
whose imageries
at the outside shower
and
at the outside shower area
are the best ?
