average every day Nigerians

they were not perceived as financially rich folks / financially wealthy folks

were just normal everyday folks
.. everyday average folks ..
just doing their thing
within the means of
the honest income available to them from
their salaries / wages and their business / enterprise.
Nigeria residents and citizens who
were in
the Anambra State area
circa 1980 A.D
i.e
( 2024 – 1980 = ) 44 years ago
and
who were old enough to be
conscious/ aware of happenings in their environment
may also remember
the sudden appearance of
high numbers of the 50 CC MOTOR-BIKE
on/in
some tertiary education institutions
in the area
e.g
the University of Nigeria, Nsukka Campus
( .. now geographically in Enugu State but part of Anambra State at circa 1980 A.D ).
it would seem
that
for the first time
since the end of
the Nigeria Civil War i.e the Biafra(n) War [ 1967 A.D to 1970 A.D]
a State Government/Administration of
a mainstream Igbo/Ibo tribe geographical region
was awarding / granting bursaries to it’s students in higher institutions.
the amount ( Naira 200 ) was rather small compared to
Naira 600 for students of Delta State origin and
Naira 1000 and above for students of Northern Nigeria origin ( if my memory serves correctly)
however
it was a very welcome initiative from the Anambra State Government / Administration
at the time
and
His Excellency, Governor Jim Nwobodo
and his circa 1980 A.D administration
will always? be positively remembered by
the Anambra State origin tertiary education institutions students
of that era
for the uplift that
that bursary impacted into their lives
which enabled some of the students
to buy
table fans,
small MOTOR-BIKES e.g the 50 CC MOTOR-BIKE
and
to do other stuff
which they might definitely not have been able to do
if not for
that positive initiative of
the circa 1980 A.D Governor Jim Nwobodo Administration of Anambra State.
incidentally
despite the reality
that
the gesture of
the circa 1980 A.D Governor Jim Nwobodo Administration of Anambra State
was seemingly geared towards
.. and intended towards ..
introducing an uplift
into the lives of
every tertiary institution student of Anambra State origin at the time,
there were rumours
that on
one major tertiary institution campus
some Anambra State origin students did not get the Bursary Award
despite
following the due procedure for receiving it.
it would seem,
according to rumours,
that
on that campus
the procedure involved
the student writing his/her name on a sheet of paper
provided by
persons involved in disbursing the funds to the students.
it would appear,
according to rumours,
that
when the payouts began
some students found that their names were not on the lists
being used for disbursement
and so
they could not collect the bursary
even though they had written their names down
in the provided sheers of paper
at the appropriate time.
some circulating rumours at the time rumoured
that
a number of the affected students seemed
for some reason
to be students
.. irrespective of their diverse departments / faculties ..
who were ordinarily resident outside of the mainstream Igbo/Ibo tribe states
at the time.
these rumours
rumoured
a conspiracy theory
at the time.
whatever.
in any case
that sort of scenario
would have been avoided
if
the various departments
in that institution
had been directly involved in the Bursary disbursement.
every department knows who it’s students are
and
how many students it has.
so
all that was needed
really
was to
process the payouts from
the department general office where
the students submit their Course Registration materials each session ( at the time )
and
for the student to show his/her I.D CARD
at the point of collection
and
sign to confirm that he/she has received the payout.
such a procedure would have had
in-built high accountability
in it
in addition to
ensuring
that
all eligible registered students received the awards
and
would also have
made it possible for students who were not in school at the time
e.g
those on a compulsory one year out of school probation period
due to their academic performance
to receive the awards
since they are/were still bona fide students of the institution
even though they are/were not on Campus at the time of the payouts.
so much for how a positive gesture may be marred by defective procedure.
and now back to our subject matter of MOTOR-BIKES :
although motor-bikes i.e motor-cycles have been
a significant component
of the transportation mechanism
here in Nigeria
for several decades,
as far as i can tell,
Nigeria does not have any indigenous motor-bike manufacturing company
that
manufactures motor-bikes from scratch to finish
using raw materials from Nigeria
which strikes the mind,
really,
as the rumours have been that
all the raw materials required to build a motor-bike and it’s parts
e.g
tyres,
metal frame,
etc
occur in nature i.e occur naturally in high abundance
.. historically and currently ..
here in Nigeria
so much for Nigeria and it’s inability
( .. either by intentional design or accidental happenstance .. )
to translate
the nature given raw materials in it’s territory
into Production Companies / Manufacturing Plants
which
while producing stuff like motor-bikes
also have positive impact
like
creating employment for workers and staff of such companies
and
related collateral impact in the Nigeria Economy
derivative of commercial/financial transactions between
folks working in such companies
and residents / persons in Nigeria
that transact with them
– – at whatever level of economic activity.
be that as it maybe,
it can not be denied that
there has been
superb imagery in the international public space linked to the motor-bike i.e the motor-cycle.
