in as much as
sports
is seen variously as

a recreational activity
a profession
a hobby
a valuable regime for the maintenence of good health

depending on

the prism from which it is viewed

and

therefore

perceived variously

in direct variance
with the differing individual perspective(s)
from which it is viewed

it remains

my rigid stand
my rigid stance

that

sports
and
participatory access to sporting activity

has
.. in some parts of the world
for example,
here in Nigeria ..

an in-built barrier to entry

whose level of difficulty

varies from one sport to another.

by this i mean
for example

that
if
a nine or ten year old Onitsha Native
residing in Onitsha
or
anywhere in Nigeria for that matter

sees / watches
some videos
of
Serena Williams
winning
an international lawn tennis competition
and

then gets all fired up
and
decides that she/he is going to be
the
Onitsha version of Serena Williams
and
become a World Number 1
in lawn tennis

she/he
is
going to have to
overcome
barriers to entry
like :

(1) where can she/he buy a good lawn tennis racquet and good lawn tennis balls ?

(2) at an exchange rate
hovering as at date June 2025 A.D
somewhere around N1600 = 1 USD
i.e 1600 Nigeria Naira = 1 United States Dollar do/does her/his parents

.. in the instance of this example ..

do the parents of the nine or ten year old kid
have the financial resources
in
Naira terms
( .. or any other currency really .. )
to spend the kind of money
required

in
the currently prevailing

continuing,
continous and
continual

devaluation of the Nigera Naira
economic dispensation

kick-started circa 1989 A.D
[ .. or is that 1986 A.D ? ]
and
ongoing
to and as at date
June 2025 A.D

to kit out that kid
regularly and consistently
with a view to
appropriately tooling up that kid
to give
playing that sport a shot ?

(3) location and venue :
how many lawn tennis courts exist in the city / town
e.g
Onitsha where she/he is located ?

does she/he have entry access to those lawn tennis courts ?

how far away are the lawn tennis courts from her/his residential abode
as

extreme distance from the lawn tennis court(s)
great distance from the lawn tennis court(s)
much distance from the lawn tennis court(s)
fair distance from the lawn tennis court(s)

can impact
negatively
on
how frequently
she/he can get to the lawn tennis courts

and

therefore
on how frequently she/he can practice

(4) practice partners :
who is she/he going to be playing/praticing with ?

how many kids in the neighbourhood can
and/or
do play lawn tennis ?

how many of them,
if any,
are available
and
willing to be on the lawn tennis courts
at the same times as she/he is ?

CONTRAST
the aforegoing
with

Football
for example

where
virtually every open space
can be turned into a football field
and
any available round object that rolls

for example
oranges

.. you read that right ..

– – oranges – –

can be turned into
a football for the kids to kick around.

and
relating the aforegoing
to
the matter of surf boards
.. and surfing ..

it is clearly
a direct inference
a direct perception

that the barriers to entry
in this instance
would include :

(1) access to a body of water
that
actually generates the waves on which one can surf

(2) the ability to get/own/hire a surf board

(3) the ability to swim
.. it would be pretty stupid
of
any folk who doesn’t know how to swim
to go about
trying to
maneuvre a flat board
over and/or through
rolling waves
at
the sea
or
sea front

all the same
tell me,
whose imagery
with the surf board
is
historically and currently
the greatest
of and for
all time ?
