Swimming is
.. any which way one looks at it ..
a very useful SURVIVAL SKILL that no one can ordinarily forecast if and or when it will come in very handy.

some stuff i came across on the Internet some time back in the day amply illustrates

the value
the usefulness
the importance

of

the ability to swim.

i don’t remember now if it was at LindaIkejiBlog at Instagram or somewhere else

but it was a story about something that happened somewhere in Rivers State, Nigeria or Bayelsa State, Nigeria or thereabouts

i will try and search to see if the story is still up anywhere on the internet and if i see the story i will copy the link or screenshot the stuff or both and paste it somewhere here at this post.

basically
what had happened
.. if i remember the story with any degree of accuracy ..
is/was that

some folks
WHO COULD NOT SWIM
had found themselves in a river
and
were basically drowning to death.

luckily for them
there was a fellow around who could swim
and
HE DECIDED TO BE A HERO

i guess so
because
according to the story

HE DIVED INTO THE WATERS
TEN DIFFERENT TIMES

AND EACH TIME
HE SAVED ONE FOLK THAT WOULD OTHERWISE HAVE DROWNED
AND
BROUGHT THAT FOLK SAFELY OUT OF THE WATERS

AND THEN
DIVED BACK INTO THE RIVER
TO SAVE MORE FOLKS

HE DID THAT TEN TIMES

HE SAVED TEN DIFFERENT FOLKS

THE ELEVENTH TIME
HE DIVED INTO THE RIVER
TO BRING OUT A DROWNING FOLK

HE DIDN’T MAKE IT OUT OF THE RIVER ALIVE.

he drowned and died in the waters.

the story said something like
he had become weak and tired
after diving in 10 times
and
saving 10 different folks that he brought out of the waters

there is a tendency to wonder why he didn’t stop when he had gotten weak and tired ?

there was no gain in that ELEVENTH DIVE

he lost his life
and
he didn’t bring out the person he had dived in to save

so in a way
IT WAS A HORRENDOUS WASTE OF
THE LIFE OF A KIND HEARTED FOLK
BY THAT KIND HEARTED FOLK HIMSELF

in any case
the story illustrates
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ABILITY TO SWIM

if those ten folks he saved had known how to swim maybe they might have helped bring out other folks and maybe more folks would have been saved out of the river and the kind hearted swimmer may not have gotten exhausted and died while trying to save a soul.

i suppose
THE LESSON
really

is that
FOLKS WHO KNOW HOW TO SWIM
SHOULD NOT OVER ESTIMATE
THEIR ABILITIES
AND
SHOULD KNOW WHEN TO
KEEP AWAY FROM
THE WATERS

i come to this conclusion
taking into consideration
the story of

a young Nigeria Medical Doctor
who died in a swimming pool
somewhere in the Caribbean(s).

this is a chap
i had known since we were about
9 years or 10 years old.

according to the story we were told,
he had taken some alcohol
and was drunk?
and
had decided in that physical state
to go for a swim.

and
he had died there in the swimming pool.

when i heard that story
i had immediately suspected foul play
somewhere
but i had no proof or evidence
so i just said nothing
and i just listened to the story
and heard it out.

i mean this is a guy
i knew.
he wasn’t stupid in any way.

anyway, the take out from the story regarding his death was that / is that

WHEN A FOLK IS DRUNK
AND/OR
WHEN A FOLK DRINKS A FAIR AMOUNT
OF ALCOHOL
THAT FOLK SHOULDN’T GO SWIMMING
BECAUSE
THE LIQUOR COULD HAVE THE EFFECT
OF MAKING THE FOLK
TIRED AND WEAK
WHEN IN THE WATER
AND
THE FOLK COULD DROWN AND DIE
ESPECIALLY IF THERE ARE NO OTHER FOLKS AROUND
WHO SEE THE FOLK GET INTO THE WATER
AND
MAY THEREFORE
NOTICE WHAT IS HAPPENING
AND
LEND A HAND TO SAVE A LIFE.

Tough Conclusion to arrive it.
but
if you put those 2 stories parri-passu
if you put those 2 stories side by side

one commonality
stands out

namely,
those 2 chaps could swim
and
they had died in the waters
because they had gotten tired and weak
while in the waters.

so, it is a FAIR CONCLUSION
that
FOLKS WHO KNOW HOW TO SWIM
SHOULD NOT OVER ESTIMATE
THEIR ABILITIES
AND
SHOULD KNOW WHEN TO
KEEP AWAY FROM
THE WATERS
