i really don’t have a lot of detail.
and what information i do have about Beauty Pageants here in Nigeria, Western Africa, Africa is
more or less
information generally circulating in the public space
and related rumours.

as far as i can tell
there have always been Beauty Pageants here in Nigeria
dating back to
the 1960s and 1970s
and maybe even earlier.

the only difference is that back then they used to be called
Beauty Contests and/or Beauty Competitions.

there used to be a very well known one
organized by a newspaper in Nigeria called
the Daily Times of Nigeria.

i am not really aware if that newspaper still exists any more / any longer
although Wikipedia suggests that it is still an on-going concern
till date 2021.

it is a guess that it’s hey-days were probably between 1970 and 1979,
during which period
it was probably the major newspaper in Nigeria
being
more or less
the most widely read newspaper among
a generation of newspapers that included names like
The Observer,
The Tide,
The New Nigerian,
The Punch
and
later
The Concord ( 1979? )

if my memory serves correctly,
The Guardian came later and then took
the numero uno position.

in which igbo/ibo tribe Major General Aguiyi-Ironsi 
then Supreme Military Commander? of Nigeria
had been killed in Ibadan, Western Region, Nigeria.

although Wikipedia says
what she won was Miss Western Nigeria and not Miss Nigeria.

by and large, Beauty Contests were seen,
as far as i can tell,
as an opportunity for beautiful women to win stuff

there must be something to it all which the public does not know
as they could not understand why
● some folks will bring out their own money
● spend it to organize a beauty contest
and
● buy beautiful and expensive items to give the ladies
.. including cars sometimes ..

such rumourers pointed to the cash gifts
.. which were sometimes quite huge ..

winners and first and second runners-up

Beauty Contests did not really capture the Nigeria public imagination

the Nigerian lady Agbani Darego won the Miss World Beauty Pageant.

Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria Pageant
however Beauty Pageants did not quite capture the public imagination until
she won the Miss World Competition.


the imagination of the Nigeria Public had actually,
as far as i can tell,
being originally POSITIVELY CHANNELED in the direction of
Beauty Pageants when
Bianco Onoh participated in and won the Nigeria
Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria Pageant in 1988
and
went on further to compete in other Beauty Contests
and win prizes at/in some of them
including winning the Miss Intercontinental Beauty Contest.

prior to Bianca Onoh’s emergence in the Beauty Pageants industry,
the general rumour was that

● it was girls from backgrounds and families with questionable moral values
● it was girls that themselves personally had questionable moral values
● it was girls from poor financial backgrounds who were ready to make money at all costs including wearing bikinis? on stage

that went in for Beauty Contests.

Bianca Onoh’s entry into the Beauty Pageants sector radically changed that negative perception.

Agbani Darego is a University Graduate of Computer Science or so and some of the televised Beauty Contest / Pageant shows on Nigeria television at that period back in the day showed someone identified as her dad in the traditional cultural fedora? hat of the riverine South-South Nigeria in attendance.

however, it was really when Bianca Onoh forayed into Beauty Contests that the negative social perception of the
morals, character and background of the person and family of
the Beauty Contestants
radically, suddenly and dramatically changed
although Bianca Onoh never won the Miss World Beauty Pageant.

and that thing is that
it was also shortly after Agbani Darego won the Miss World Competition that rumours began to circulate around Nigeria

organizers of Beauty Contests take advantage of the lady contestants
and
the lady contestants are un-able to speak out about it.

a rumour went about that
after Agbani Darego won the Miss World Beauty Pageant Competition
some wicked Nigeria men organised a beauty contest in Nigeria
and
flew the contestants to Brazil?, South America?
where they
seized their passports from them, held them captive and
forced them into shooting porn-movie scenes / pornographic movie scenes.

all other sorts of rumours began to be rumoured about Beauty Contests.


more recently, ( 2017 ? )
there was a furor about a Beauty Pageant organized
by Anambra? Broadcasting? Service? ( ABS ? )
regarding which
at a point the car gift given of the winner was
rumoured to have been retrieved from her
and
also a sex?-tape? of the winner was circulated.
