i really don’t have a lot of detail.
and what information i do have about Beauty Pageants here in Nigeria, Western Africa, Africa is
more or less
information generally circulating in the public space
and related rumours.

as far as i can tell
there have always been Beauty Pageants here in Nigeria
dating back to
the 1960s and 1970s
and maybe even earlier.

the only difference is that back then they used to be called
Beauty Contests and/or Beauty Competitions.

there used to be a very well known one
organized by a newspaper in Nigeria called
the Daily Times of Nigeria.

i am not really aware if that newspaper still exists any more / any longer
although Wikipedia suggests that it is still an on-going concern
till date 2021.

it is a guess that it’s hey-days were probably between 1970 and 1979,
during which period

it was probably the major newspaper in Nigeria
being
more or less
the most widely read newspaper among
a generation of newspapers that included names like

The Observer,
The Tide,
The New Nigerian,
The Punch
and
later

The Concord ( 1979? )

if my memory serves correctly,
The Guardian came later and then took
the numero uno position.

Coco Nicole ormaahleechar nm, talking about the Daily Times
which Wikipedia says was founded in 1925
reminds one of
The West African Pilot newspaper
which
Wikipedia says was founded in 1937.

The West African Pilot newspaper was founded by Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe.
The West African Pilot and Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe had been at
the very fore-front of
the struggle and battle for the independence of Nigeria
and at the very fore-front of
the advocacy for Nationalism
and
the advocacy for Pan-African-ism.

is rumoured
by many
to be linked to
the

aggression,
killings,
ethnic cleansing,
genocide,
xenophobia

and

all .. including rapes,
the raping of pregnant women ??,
the cutting open of the stomachs of pregnant women oftentimes after raping them ??,
bringing out the fetuses/babies and killing the foetuses ??
and thereafter
killing the mother or leaving her lying on the ground there to die there in pain ??,
etc ??,

which were directed against
the igbo/ibo tribe and other tribes of the then Eastern Region of Nigeria
in the then Northern Nigeria
and
in the non-igbo/non-ibo and non-Eastern Region parts of Nigeria
including the then Western Region
( about which it is rumoured that
anyone suspected to be igbo/ibo or from the Eastern Region was killed if
he/she could not
pronounce the Yoruba tribe / Western Region word Obalende correctly )

in the after-math of the second Nigeria military coup of 1966
in which igbo/ibo tribe Major General Aguiyi-Ironsi
then Supreme Military Commander? of Nigeria
had been killed in Ibadan, Western Region, Nigeria.

and perhaps? also? so much for Nationalism ?
and perhaps? also? so much for Pan-African-ism ?
and perhaps? also? so much for fighting to free Nigeria from any perceived shackles? and/or bondage ?

in any case, Coco Nicole ormaahleechar nm,
( to go ) back to the Daily Times of Nigeria newspaper,
the newspaper as far back as 1957 began to sponsor
The Miss Nigeria Beauty Pageant Contest / Competition

also, Coco Nicole nnkeh nm, there was
a famous, beautiful lady Nigeria TV personality and Nigeria media celebrity then
called Julie Coker
( .. she later became Mrs. Julie Enahoro when she was married to the very handsome Mr. Mike Enahoro, also a TV Media personality back then .. )

who is rumoured to have won the Daily Times of Nigeria beauty contest
at a time
although Wikipedia says
what she won was Miss Western Nigeria and not Miss Nigeria.

by and large, Beauty Contests were seen,
as far as i can tell,
as an opportunity for beautiful women to win stuff

this photo, like the others, was sourced from/via the internet

although
some rumourers
did rumour that

there must be something to it all which the public does not know
as they could not understand why
● some folks will bring out their own money
● spend it to organize a beauty contest
and
● buy beautiful and expensive items to give the ladies
.. including cars sometimes ..

this photo, like the others, was sourced from/via the internet

just for simply being beautiful
and
just for simply participating in the contests.

such rumourers pointed to the cash gifts
.. which were sometimes quite huge ..
that were given to
winners and first and second runners-up
in the beauty contests

just for simply being beautiful
and
just for simply participating in the contests

as an indicator that
there was something going on that the public was not aware of.

this photo, like the others, was sourced from/via the internet

so much for rumours.
and so much for rumourers.

in any case,
as far as i can tell,
Beauty Contests did not really capture the Nigeria public imagination
until
the Nigerian lady Agbani Darego won the Miss World Beauty Pageant.

Agbani Darego had earlier won the Nigeria
Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria Pageant
however Beauty Pageants did not quite capture the public imagination until

she won the Miss World Competition.

the imagination of the Nigeria Public had actually,
as far as i can tell,
being
originally POSITIVELY CHANNELED in the direction of
Beauty Pageants
when
Bianco Onoh participated in and won the Nigeria
Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria Pageant in 1988

and
went on further to compete in other Beauty Contests
and win prizes at/in some of them
including winning the Miss Intercontinental Beauty Contest.

Bianca Onoh was a University graduate ( a lawyer )
and
came from one of
the more notable and popular famillies in Igbo-land / Ibo-land Nigeria
being a daughter of
a/the very well known and very popular Chief C. C. Onoh
who was famous in Igboland / Iboland and other parts of Nigeria
as a
leading Real? Estate? developer? ( ref? : Real Estate, Uwani, Enugu? )
and as
a politician of the Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe era.

this photo, like the others, was sourced from/via the internet

prior to Bianca Onoh’s emergence in the Beauty Pageants industry,
the general rumour was that

● it was girls from backgrounds and families with questionable moral values
● it was girls that themselves personally had questionable moral values
● it was girls from poor financial backgrounds who were ready to make money at all costs including wearing bikinis? on stage

that went in for Beauty Contests.

Bianca Onoh’s entry into the Beauty Pageants sector radically changed that negative perception.

Agbani Darego is a University Graduate of Computer Science or so and some of the televised Beauty Contest / Pageant shows on Nigeria television at that period back in the day showed someone identified as her dad in the traditional cultural fedora? hat of the riverine South-South Nigeria in attendance.

however, it was really when Bianca Onoh forayed into Beauty Contests that the negative social perception of the
morals, character and background of the person and family of
the Beauty Contestants
radically, suddenly and dramatically changed
although Bianca Onoh never won the Miss World Beauty Pageant.
( wasn’t she given the Miss Amity prize at that competition ?
or was it at another competition ? )

one thing though, Coco Nicole nnmaah nm,
and that thing is that
it was also shortly after Agbani Darego won the Miss World Competition
that rumours began to circulate around Nigeria
rumouring that
organizers of Beauty Contests take advantage of the lady contestants
and
the lady contestants are un-able to speak out about it.

a rumour went about that
after Agbani Darego won the Miss World Beauty Pageant Competition
some wicked Nigeria men organised a beauty contest in Nigeria
and
flew the contestants to Brazil?, South America?
where they
seized their passports from them, held them captive and
forced them into shooting porn-movie scenes / pornographic movie scenes.

all other sorts of rumours began to be rumoured about Beauty Contests.

more recently, ( 2017 ? )
there was a furor about a Beauty Pageant organized
by Anambra? Broadcasting? Service? ( ABS ? )
regarding which
at a point the car gift given of the winner was
rumoured to have been retrieved from her
and
also a sex?-tape? of the winner was circulated.

according to rumours,
after being exposed to so much wickedness and evil stress,
the lady has since been vindicated and her car returned to her.

however, the rumours are that
all these sort of stuff are standard procedure in the USA
and that
in the USA it is virtually impossible for a lady to
have a career as a model

or
have a career in the entertainment industry ( music, radio, movies – whether big-screen or television, fashion, etc )
or
participate and win in a beauty contest

if some wicked behind-the-scenes folks
do not have
nude photos and nude videos of her i.e
photos and videos in which she is stark naked and
in revealing postures and positions

as well as
sex-tapes of the lady

and that this is the reason why
after some time,
sooner or later,
sex-tapes of well-known and/or famous lady celebrities in the USA
tend to show up
either on the internet or in/on other public space forums / fora

such that
if it is not a sex-tape of Nicki Minaj

it is a sex-tape of Kim Kardiashian

or
nude photos of Vanessa Williams
appearing in Pent-House Magazine (1981? ).

the rumours actually say that
the 1950s? nude photos of the beautiful Maryln Monroe
in PlayBoy magazine
are an indication of how far back
this nude photos culture has been on in the USA.

Maryln Monroe. one of the most beautiful and most talented actresses of all time.

Coco Nicole nnmaah nm, the rumours also say that
the nude photos, nude videos, sex?-tapes?
are essentially used as
a blackmail tool / a whitemail tool
to have and keep a hold on the ladies
and force them to do things they would not naturally, ordinarily do

with the threat and blackmail / whitemail that
if the ladies refuse to do their bidding
the nude photos, nude videos, sex?-tapes? will be made public

and that
virtually every single one of and indeed virtually all of the
nude photos, nude videos, sex?-tapes?
of celebrity ladies / famous ladies / tv stars / movie stars / singers, etc
that has appeared and have appeared in the USA

was and were released after the person in
the nude photos, nude videos, sex?-tapes?

refused to do something that
the persons holding the nude photos, nude videos, sex?-tapes?
and
wickedly and evilly blackmailing / whitemailing him/her with it/them

had told him / her to do.

i really don’t know.

all the same, Coco Nicole nnkeh nm,
so much for Modelling,
so much for Careers in the Movie Industry,
so much for Careers in the Music Industry,
so much for Careers in the Entertainment Industry,
so much for Beauty Pageants

… and yeah  …

so much for for Beauty Pageants in Nigeria also.

yeah.

really.
